Wheeler: Time Becomes a Song

The Granta Chorale

Saturday 1 May 2010 at 7.30pm at St. Mary's Church, Saffron Walden

The Granta Chorale is very pleased to be able to include two works by their musical director Janet Wheeler in this programme.
Time Becomes A Song is a setting of five poems by the Northamptonshire peasant poet John Clare (1793-1864) who wrote with great insight of his local countryside, his unrequited love and the injustices of the day.
Time Becomes A Song was premiered in October 2009 near to Clare's birthplace in a celebratory concert for the John Clare Trust.

We also give the first performance of The joy as it flies which was originally planned as a cycle of epitaph settings, however the brief broadened to include poems and texts in a similar vein. The themes of the sun, life, death and eternity weave in and out through the work.
The title comes from the final piece - Eternity's Sunrise by William Blake:

He who binds to himself a joy
Does the winged life destroy
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sunrise.
